Should I try fixing winsock, and if so, how? (detail below)?

When I type anything into my address bar it loads for about a second then it comes up with a blank page! No error or anything! It says it has done. I have run a through scan with Avast (latest version) though I have not been able to update my definition files due to lack of internet. The icon in the toolbar says I have internet, but nothing works! Im using Windows Vista Home Premium. I have tried disabling add-ons in firefox, and Internet Explorer. (posting this from another computer)
